New Device Statuses and Pending-User Columns in the Console

Overview

This enhancement introduces new device statuses and additional columns in the Devices table and Device Details view. These updates help you quickly identify:

  • Which devices are waiting on end-user action (install or restart).
  • Which policies are in a pending user state due to deferrals or incomplete user actions.

These updates improve visibility into why a device is not yet compliant and whether user interaction is blocking policy progress.

Important: All devices in the organization must be running Agent version 2.1.x or later.
If any device is on a 2.0.x agent, the new statuses and related fields will not be available.

New Device Statuses

Two new device statuses reflect end-user-driven delays:

  • Pending User Install
  • Pending User Restart

These statuses appear anywhere device status is displayed, including the Devices table and related views.

Pending User Install

What It Means

A device shows Pending User Install when:

  • A policy with install notifications enabled is executing, and
  • The end user has:
    • Not yet taken the required action in the notification window, or
    • The configured deadline has not expired.

How to Use This Status

  • Identify blocked installs: Filter or review devices in this status to see which devices are waiting on user action.
  • Adjust policy strategy: If many devices remain in this state, consider:
    • Shortening or extending the deadline window.
    • Updating notification messaging to improve response rates.

Pending User Restart

What It Means

A device shows Pending User Restart when:

  • An install (such as an OS or application patch) has completed.
  • A restart is required to finalize the update.
  • Restart notifications are enabled.
  • The end user has:
    • Not yet restarted the device, or
    • The restart deadline has not expired.

How to Use This Status

  • Manage restart behavior: If many devices are in this state, you may want to:
    • Adjust restart deadline windows.
    • Update notification messaging to encourage timely restarts.

Devices Table: New Pending User Columns

The Devices table now includes additional columns that surface user-pending information. These columns allow you to quickly see:

  • Whether a device is blocked by end-user action.
  • Which type of pending state applies (install vs. restart).
  • The policy context for that pending state.

New Columns

  • Pending User Install
Indicates whether the device is currently in a pending state due to install notifications.
  • Pending User Restart
Indicates whether the device is currently in a pending state due to restart notifications.

Enable the New Columns

  1. In the console, go to Devices.
  2. Open the column picker (if available in your environment).
  3. Select:
    • Pending User Install
    • Pending User Restart

Once enabled, you can filter and sort to identify devices awaiting user action.

Device Details: Associated Policies Table Updates

On the Device Details page, the Associated Policies table now includes additional columns to show which policy is causing a user-pending state.

What’s New in Device Details > Associated Policies

Active Notification

Indicates:

  • An install or restart notification is currently active for the device.
  • The device is waiting for:
    • A user response, or
    • The expiration of the configured deadline before policy execution continues.

Notifications Enabled

Indicates whether install or restart notifications are enabled for the policy.

Possible values:

  • Install — Install notifications are enabled.
  • Restart — Restart notifications are enabled.

These fields help you identify exactly which policy is responsible for a Pending User state on a specific device.

FAQs

Why do I see “Pending User Install” or “Pending User Restart” instead of the usual compliance status?

These statuses indicate that the device is ready to proceed but is waiting on end-user action (either to start an install or complete a restart). They help you distinguish between technical issues and user-driven delays.

Does this change how policies run?

No. These enhancements do not change policy execution behavior. They only improve visibility into when policy progress is blocked by user decisions or deferrals.

Why don’t I see these new statuses or columns?

If any device in your organization is running Agent version 2.0 or earlier, the new statuses and columns are hidden.

To enable this feature, ensure all devices are upgraded to Agent version 2.x or later.
