Overview
This article answers common questions about how Remote Control with Splashtop behaves in real-world use, including deployment options, consent behavior, platform differences, licensing considerations, and feature availability.
This article focuses on expected behavior and usage.
For errors, failures, or known issues, see Remote Control with Splashtop – FAQ and Troubleshooting:

Licensing and Access
How do I know which Automox license I have?
In the Automox console, click the three dots (⋮) in the top-right corner and select Billing to view your current license tier.
If you need help confirming entitlements, contact your Account Manager or email success@automox.com.
Is Remote Control with Splashtop included with all Automox licenses?
Core Remote Control is included with Automate Enterprise. Automox Resolve powered by Splashtop is available as an add-on and unlocks advanced Remote Control features such as file transfer, session recording, and multi-monitor support.
What is the cost of the premium add-on?
Pricing varies by organization. Contact your Account Manager for a quote. If you’re unsure who your contact is, email success@automox.com.
How can I tell when Splashtop Remote Control is available in my tenant?
When your tenant is upgraded, you will see Remote Control options available from the Automox console (for example, via the three-dot menu). If you do not see these options yet, check back or contact success@automox.com.
Deployment and Installation
How is the Splashtop Streamer deployed?
The Splashtop Streamer is deployed through the Automox agent and can be installed in two ways:
- Organization-wide from Settings > Remote Control
- Per device from the Device Details page
Both installation and uninstallation are supported org-wide or per device.
📘 Quick Start Guide – Using Remote Control with Splashtop
https://docs.automox.com/product/Product_Documentation/Remote_Control_Module/Splashtop_QSG.htm
Can I deploy the Streamer only to specific devices?
Yes. You can deploy the Streamer per device if you only need Remote Control on a subset of endpoints.
If you are confident all devices should have Remote Control, an org-wide deployment is recommended. Devices can be uninstalled later if needed.
Can I deploy Splashtop using Intune or another MDM?
There is no benefit to deploying Splashtop via Intune or other tools. While the Splashtop Streamer can be pre-installed, Automox must still perform the install action to register the device. Without registration through Automox, Remote Control will not function.
How long does installation take? Is a reboot required?
Installation typically takes 2–5 minutes per endpoint, depending on network speed and device performance.
A system reboot is not required.
Is there a single installer for the Automox agent and Splashtop?
No. The Automox agent and the Splashtop Streamer are installed separately. The Streamer install is triggered from the Automox console and executed by the agent.
Remote Control Consent and End-User Experience
Does the end user need to approve a Remote Control session?
By default, Remote Control consent is enabled, meaning the end user must approve the session.
Consent settings can be changed:
- Per device
- For multiple devices using bulk actions
If consent is disabled, is anything required from end users?
No additional action is required. However, it is considered best practice to notify users before initiating unattended Remote Control sessions.
Is consent supported on macOS?
Yes. Consent is enabled by default on macOS and can be modified per device or for groups of devices from the Devices page.
Are audit logs available for Remote Control sessions?
Yes. Remote Control activity is logged and available for audit and review.
macOS Behavior
Where is Splashtop installed on macOS?
Splashtop is installed via the Automox agent (running with root permissions) to /Applications.
When are macOS permission prompts shown?
macOS permission prompts appear when the streamer is installed.
Do macOS users need to be administrators?
No. Permissions apply to the currently logged-in user. The user must enter their password to approve permissions, but admin privileges are not required.
What happens if a user switches accounts on a Mac?
Permissions are per user. Switching users may cause the Remote Control session to disconnect and require reconnection under the new user context.
Does Automox support PPPC profiles for Jamf?
Yes. See the macOS MDM guidance here:
https://docs.automox.com/product/Product_Documentation/Remote_Control_Module/macOS_MDM_Splashtop.htm
Windows Behavior
Can I connect with admin rights? How does UAC work?
Yes. If no user is logged in, you can authenticate using admin credentials.
UAC prompts behave as if you were physically at the device.
Are there known issues using Windows admin credentials?
If you encounter issues, submit a support ticket via the Automox Help Center:
https://help.automox.com/hc/en-us
Network and Security Considerations
Do I need to open firewall ports?
Yes. Certain ports must be allowed for optimal Remote Control performance.
📘 Firewall Allowlisting Rules
https://docs.automox.com/product/Product_Documentation/Agents/Agent_Requirements/Agent_Firewall_Allowlisting_Rules.htm#OptionalandPerformancePortsforAutomoxResolvepoweredbySplashtop
Does this work with security tools like SentinelOne or Zscaler?
Yes, but required ports and allowlisting must be configured. Refer to the firewall documentation above for details.
Feature Behavior
Is file transfer supported?
Yes. File transfer is available with Automox Resolve (premium).
How fast is the Remote Control connection?
Once the Splashtop Streamer is installed, connection time is typically 7–10 seconds, depending on network conditions.
Does Remote Control work the same on macOS and Windows?
The experience is consistent across platforms, with OS-specific differences related to permissions and session handling.
How does multi-monitor support work?
Basic multi-monitor support is included. Some advanced multi-monitor features require the premium add-on.
Legacy Remote Control and Coexistence
Will Splashtop conflict with legacy Automox Remote Control or VNC tools?
No. Splashtop is a separate installation and does not rely on legacy Automox Remote Control components.
