Why the Automox Tray Shows “All Up to Date” When Patches Are Pending

Applies to: Windows, macOS  |

Issue

The Automox tray can display “All Up to Date” even when the Automox console shows pending patches or updates for the same device. This discrepancy happens because the tray reflects local, real-time activity rather than the device’s complete patch backlog from the console.

Environment

  • Automox Agent with End User Notifications enabled
  • Windows or macOS with the Automox Tray installed
  • One or more patch policies targeting the device

Cause

The tray status shows whether updates are currently being installed on the local device. When there is no active installation, the tray may show “All Up to Date” even if the device still has pending updates. Those updates will apply the next time a policy that is configured to install them executes on the device.

Tray messages and what they mean

Tray Message Meaning
All Up to Date No patching action is currently running. Pending updates will install during the next scheduled policy execution.
Install Updates Updates are pending and a deadline is set for installation; the tray is prompting action or indicating a deadline state.
Installing Updates Updates are actively being installed.

Resolution

Step 1: Confirm the device status in the Console

  1. Open the Automox Console and go to the Devices → Device Details page.

Step 2: Review policy configuration

  1. Navigate to the Associated Policies
  2. Confirm the policy targeting the device is Enabled and scheduled to apply updates.
  3. Verify the Execution Schedule. The tray may remain “All Up to Date” until the next scheduled run begins.
  4. If your policy uses deadlines, expect the tray to show “Install Updates” as the deadline approaches.

Step 3: Trigger a policy run (Admin)

  • On the Device Details page → Associated policies → click Run on this device for the patch policy covering the pending updates

Step 4: Verify tray status changes

  • During patching, the tray should show “Installing Updates”.
  • After successful installation, it returns to “All Up to Date”.
