Objective
To troubleshoot and resolve instances where macOS software updates or major operating system upgrades fail to appear or become stuck during download in System Preferences/Settings by resetting Apple's UpdateBrainService daemon.
Overview
When checking for or downloading updates on macOS, Apple's software update framework utilizes a background daemon called com.apple.MobileSoftwareUpdate.UpdateBrainService.
If this service hangs or encounters a cached state error, new macOS updates (including minor point releases and major OS upgrades) may fail to appear in the update catalog or may freeze indefinitely during the download phase. Force quitting this process forces macOS to re-initialize the update check and resume the download pipeline.
ℹ️ Applicability: While originally identified during specific macOS Monterey releases, this procedure applies to all macOS versions and updates (including macOS Monterey, Ventura, Sonoma, Sequoia, and later).
Troubleshooting Procedure
1.Open System Preferences / System Settings:
- Open System Preferences (or System Settings on macOS Ventura and later).
- Navigate to Software Update (or General > Software Update).
- Keep this window open in the background while performing the remaining steps.
2.Launch Activity Monitor:
Launch Activity Monitor on the target Mac endpoint (located in /Applications/Utilities/Activity Monitor.app).
3.Set View Options to All Processes:
In the top menu bar of Activity Monitor, click View and select All Processes to ensure background system daemons are visible.
4.Force Quit UpdateBrainService:
- Use the search bar in the top-right corner of Activity Monitor to search for:
com.apple.MobileSoftwareUpdate.UpdateBrainService- Select the matching process from the list.
- Click the Stop (X) icon in the top toolbar and select Force Quit.
5.Re-check and Resume Update Download:
- Return to the Software Update window.
- Confirm that the missing macOS update now appears.
- Click Upgrade Now or Update Now.
- If the download freezes or fails to begin: Force quit
com.apple.MobileSoftwareUpdate.UpdateBrainServicea second time while the download is initializing to force the stream to reconnect.
Alternative CLI Resolution (Terminal)
Administrators managing remote Mac endpoints via SSH or Automox Worklets can perform the same process using the macOS terminal:
# Force quit the MobileSoftwareUpdate daemon via CLI
sudo pkill -f com.apple.MobileSoftwareUpdate.UpdateBrainService
# Trigger a fresh software update catalog check
softwareupdate -l
