No Available Update for Third-Party Application

Issue

A third-party application on a device has a newer version available from the vendor, but Automox does not detect it as needing an update. The device's Device Details Software tab shows the app as up to date, and a Patch policy never installs the new version.

Environment

  • Automox (current agent release)
  • Windows, macOS, or Linux devices with third-party (non-OS) applications installed
  • Console areas: Devices Device Details Software, Manage Policies

Overview

Automox only auto-patches third-party applications that are in its supported software catalog. If a title is not in that catalog — or the vendor has released a version newer than the one Automox has published — the app will not appear as a pending update, even though a newer version exists. See How Automox Sources and Updates Third-Party Applications for how catalog coverage works.

Resolution

  1. Confirm the application is Automox-supported.
    • Open the device in Devices Device Details, select the Software tab, and find the application in the installed-software list.
    • Check it against Automox's supported third-party list (How Automox Sources and Updates Third-Party Applications). If the title is not covered, Automox will not detect or install its updates automatically — go to step 4.
  2. Check for a version newer than the catalog.
    • If the app is supported but the vendor just released a new version, Automox may not have published that version yet. Automox typically adds new versions within 24 hours of vendor release; re-scan the device (Device Details Scan Now) once it is available.
    • To request coverage for a missing title or a faster version add, contact Automox Support.
  3. Rule out an install type Automox does not manage.
    • Per-user vs. machine-wide: Automox patches machine-wide (all-users) installs. An application installed only under a single user profile (a common default for browsers and some productivity apps) may not be detected. Reinstall it machine-wide, or manage it with a policy (step 4).
    • Edition/name mismatch: Portable, MSIX/Store, or vendor-renamed editions may not match the cataloged title. Confirm the installed name and version — see How to Find Application Names and Versions.
  4. For unsupported titles, update the app with a policy instead of Patch:
    • Required Software Policy — enforce a specific application/version by pointing to an installer. See Creating a Required Software Policy.
    • Worklet — run a custom script to download and install the update. Start from an existing script in the Worklet Catalog (Manage Policies Create Policy Worklet, then Browse Worklets) or write your own following Creating a Worklet.

Notes

  • "No available update" is expected when the device already runs the newest version Automox has published — it does not indicate a failure.
  • A supported title still needs a completed scan to reflect a new version. Always re-scan before concluding an update is missing.
  • Requesting a title be added to the catalog is the right long-term fix for an unsupported app; a Required Software Policy or Worklet is the interim workaround.
