Resolving Microsoft Error: 0x80240022

This error has been observed in "Patch Failed" emails and in the Report > Activity Log. To resolve the issue, follow the steps below.

Prerequisites

  • Ensure you have administrative privileges on the system.

Steps to Resolution

1. Stop the Windows Update Service

  1. Open the Start Menu and type services.msc, then press Enter.
  2. In the Services window, locate Windows Update in the list.
  3. Right-click on Windows Update and select Stop.

2. Clear the Update Cache

  1. Press Win + R to open the Run dialog box.
  2. Type %windir%\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore and press Enter.
  3. In the opened folder, delete all contents. (Use Ctrl + A to select all files and folders, then press Delete.)

3. Restart the Windows Update Service

  1. Return to the Services window.
  2. Right-click Windows Update and select Start.

Troubleshooting

  • Deleting the SoftwareDistribution contents does not remove installed updates but clears the update cache.
  • If problems persist, consult Microsoft Support or your system administrator.
